Planning again

These were our travel plans for 2020 - now sadly cancelled. Maybe we might try these again in 2021. But join us here on the trip anyway - through the magic of herded electrons, we can be there after all!!

    So excited be travelling to Spain and Portugal, to be getting a small French it and then to Rudolstadt, Germany.

Day 16: Elche to Cazorla - westwards towards the mountains

What is reality after all?  We've generally tried to keep each day's travels moderately short. Today was to be a little over 4 hours from Elche to Cazorla , the longest trip so far (and the longest for a while we think), but we add to that a couple of stops for sightseeing and for lunch. First stop out of Elche was in the small town of Lorca . With a name like that, we guessed that there would be something to see. There's probably more to it than we could do on a quick stop - but we drove up to the castle (which is quite near the highway) to stretch our legs after about 90 minutes on the road - bypassing Murcia : This is obviously a site for all sorts of re-enactments and festivities, as the trebuchet in the fields indicates: or maybe they are still in preparation for the next siege. Day 75: Die Wartburg, Eisenach

There's a real sense now of seeing the final things in the area before we fly out tomorrow and end this voyage of discovery.  So it's off on a slightly longer drive (a little over an hour) to see another nearby castle/ schloss .  We headed west from Bad Berka , and eventually came off the #4 highway and bypassed the very quiet town of Eisenach : We followed the signs to Wartburg , which loomed above us on the ridge as we drove in: This was apparently the first of Germany's UNESCO World Heritage listed sites.  We stopped at the parking lot, and declined the offer of the 'traditional' donkey ride up to the castle: choosing rather to walk up from and through the small village: The castle loomed over us as we huffed and pu...

Days 4 & 5: The highs and lows of Madrid

What is reality after all?  We'll not blog every day - too busy DOING things. But here're some of the things we did over Sunday and Monday ... apart from listening to the Global Village on-line on Sunday morning (amazing and wonderful to be in two places at once!) and a little shopping for a double-sided tortilla frying pan (saves having to wipe the floor, walls and sometimes ceiling as the tortilla is flipped) and the very occasional CD that we don't have. To save some time, we went on a guided walking tour of Madrid. These can be a bit hit and miss, and you never quite know what you're getting. Here, our tour took us on to the highs and lows of Madrid. Firstly, it was a tour of rooftop bars and roofs - for views over the city.
