Day 3: Roger Wandering in Madrid
Disclaimer: All voyages in this blog are being taken safely in the comfort of our imaginations - based on our plans and intentions for travel in 2020. What is reality after all?
After the lateish night partying with Ses, today was a slow start ... breakfast in the apartment and then deciding what to do. We decided to head in different directions: Pat to visit a few museums on her 'to do' list ... and she'll write about these shortly.
In turn, I (Roger) decided to have a quieter day ... but the impulse to go out for a while overcame this. I wandered down to the Plaza Mayor, which despite being described as 'vibrant', was a much quieter scene than when we had been here last - for a free performance of Carmina Burana in the square ... again in late April for Pat's birthday (but which year?):
Then it was wandering, almost at random, in a long loop through the streets of the old quarter, taking in general street scenes like little plazas:
a church or two:
and a small walled garden with staircase:
before heading back to the apartment to read and relax. This is, after all, just the start of a longish trip - and I wouldn't want to rocket round from the start or set up expectations of frantic sight-seeing ... or maybe the non-existent jet-lag is setting in ... or maybe, in turn, that's just an excuse to be as quiet as Madrid is.
Tonight, we head out to the suburbs by train - to a town called Alcorcón - for dinner with some musical colleagues.

So lovely to see Plaza Mayor without the scaffolding that adorned it when we were there a few years back! What a wonderful rambling day! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWe always think that once Europe knows we are coming there for a holiday, up goes the scaffolding! I like Madrid, and it's fairly easy to get around.
ReplyDeleteThat's what we liked about it too. Anywhere where can just walk is great! One gets to see, hear & smell so much more That way!
