(Not) excited to be (not) travelling again!

Today we're (not) off on our 2020 trip as planned. So follow us here as we wander virtually across the world - starting in Madrid, heading to various Spanish and Portuguese locations, then to eastern France, and finishing at the Rudolstadt Festival that is (not) happening in eastern Germany.

This evening, we were to be flying out through Swiss Air, code-sharing with Singapore Airlines - from Melbourne to Singapore to Zurich to Madrid.

The travel advice, which we usually studiously ignore, is to pack what we need and then to put 50% back into the cupboards. We've been much better this time: our suitcases will easily make the weight limit, as we've returned 100% of our clothes to the closets. I guess that leaves more space and weight for virtual purchases.


But we're (not) excited to be (not) going - and determined to share that (lack of) excitement with you all.  Follow us on this trip...

      Thanks Cathy. We hope to entertain more than just ourselves that's for sure. Anyway, Roger has done so much preparation, shame not to give it a test run!

What is reality after all?  This weekend was the culmination of our 2020 travels (to be): the Rudolstadt Festival .  This was their 30th anniversary festival, which started in its present form in 1991 (though it took over from an eastern bloc song and dance festival that had been running since the 1950s). We had been there on two previous occasions, in 2015 and in 2018 - and enjoyed returning again. Previously, the weather had either been very hot (2015) or raining(2018) - but this year it was in the low 20s and fine and a very pleasant place to be. Day 75: Die Wartburg, Eisenach

There's a real sense now of seeing the final things in the area before we fly out tomorrow and end this voyage of discovery.  So it's off on a slightly longer drive (a little over an hour) to see another nearby castle/ schloss .  We headed west from Bad Berka , and eventually came off the #4 highway and bypassed the very quiet town of Eisenach : We followed the signs to Wartburg , which loomed above us on the ridge as we drove in: This was apparently the first of Germany's UNESCO World Heritage listed sites.  We stopped at the parking lot, and declined the offer of the 'traditional' donkey ride up to the castle: choosing rather to walk up from and through the small village: The castle loomed over us as we huffed and pu...

Days 4 & 5: The highs and lows of Madrid

What is reality after all?  We'll not blog every day - too busy DOING things. But here're some of the things we did over Sunday and Monday ... apart from listening to the Global Village on-line on Sunday morning (amazing and wonderful to be in two places at once!) and a little shopping for a double-sided tortilla frying pan (saves having to wipe the floor, walls and sometimes ceiling as the tortilla is flipped) and the very occasional CD that we don't have. To save some time, we went on a guided walking tour of Madrid. These can be a bit hit and miss, and you never quite know what you're getting.
