Day 29: Évora to Lisboa via Setúbal

Disclaimer: All voyages in this blog are being taken safely in the comfort of our imaginations - based on our plans and intentions for travel in 2020. What is reality after all?

On this virtual trip, we feel we can go anywhere, anytime - but never instantaneously. Today we chose to get from Évora to Lisboa with a lunch deviation via Setúbal (who isn't a racehorse - very in-joke). This is where we'd seen Gaiteiros de Lisboa play in an almost empty main square late one evening in the early 1990s. We re-created the scene via a drive-through, but in the middle of the day, and via the nearby self-titled praia:

Along the coast a little, in the Parque Urbano de Albarquel, we'd settled on having a lunch break at a restaurant called A Vela Branca:

Actually, we probably didn't need a lunch-break as the distances here were small ... however, we didn't want to arrive at the Lisbon apartment too early and have to wait round there.

The restaurant was set above the coast line, with a terrace:

and a view out over the water:

Inside was also pleasant:

as was the food:

With still some time to spend, we headed to the Atlantic coast and its sandy beaches, but a quick drive in convinced us that this was a busy scene that was so much not us:

So it was onwards now and back to the highway to Lisbon. This took us through the toll gates for the bridge - the Ponte 25 Abril:

and across it, with Lisbon ahead and on the right:

We could see the Aqueduto das Águas Livres in the distance:

As we would our way down through the streets, traffic increased, and hence no photos here, but we eventually turned onto, and then off, the Avenida de Liberdade - and found our way to the parking garage recommended by our accommodation.

Our apartment is on a small street parallel to the Avenida, and very near the Elevador da Glória, which we'll come back to in a moment:

The building has its own elevator (which was one of the selection criteria):

and a lovely lounge, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom - all very spiffy and quiet, though very central:

After settling in, and buying some more provisions locally - and resting from the strenuous drive (!), we headed out to explore the neighbourhood.  In particular, at the end of the street is the Elevador -really a funicular (and regular bloggees will know our interest in such forms of transport [alongside toy tourist trains and banana splits!]:

So we took the Elevador up the hill, past the open air graffiti galleries:

until we reached the top:

Nearby is a terrace: the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara - with views over the city:

And also nearby, a little restaurant called Lumi, with a balcony terrace, which also has a view over the rooftops:

where we ate dinner:

Wandering back to the apartment, and realising we'd hardly ventured from our immediate neighbourhood, we revisited the lookout as dusk fell:

and then walked our way down the Elevador 'street':

reminding ourselves that we were now here in this magical city:

  1. Wonderful! Your apartment looks lovely & I loved the open air art gallery as you traveled uphill. What great views over the city! Breathtaking! Are you familiar with Julie Dawn Fox's Portugal blog? She has just posted an article about virtual tours. Thought you'd be interested.
