Day 60: Arles to Pont-d'Ain (near Lyon)
Disclaimer: All voyages in this blog are being taken safely in the comfort of our imaginations - based on our plans and intentions for travel in 2020. What is reality after all?
We're steadily heading north now, really feeling that this (virtual) travel is coming towards an end. But we still have some new places to visit en-route to the Rudolstadt Festival in Germany. Today we moved from our apartment in Arles, to another accommodation in a small town near Lyon: Pont-d'Ain.
On the way, we passed by Avignon:
seeing little this time except for its long walls:
before we headed sur le pont d'Avignon:
No, it wasn't that one; we could see the real number further along the Rhône:
It was a reasonably long drive today (close on four hours normally) and we extended this slightly, with a late lunch stop in a large park (the Grand Parc Miribel Jonage - possibly used for fairs and expositions) on the outskirts of Lyon. We came off the highway and found a fascinating little village:
It provided a pleasant outdoor setting with several food outlets:
We had some old favourites: nem and goi cuon:
Onwards for less than another hour, to our apartment on the outskirts of a small town on the Ain river. The entry to the apartment from the suburban street looked a little ordinary:
but it takes you into a large park-like area, dominated by a château:
and nearby is our 'nest' with an outdoor seating area:
Le nid des écureuils means a squirrel's nest - and we found one nearby:
This was to be our nest for a few days:
We needed to stretch, so decided to walk into the small town of Pont-d'Ain for dinner (about 20 minutes). On the way, in a little outlying village near us, we found an old communal 'lavoir' or washing area, recently renovated:
The road into town is lined by interesting houses, including one larger mansion set back from the road:
around the back of which run buildings down to a stream:
The town itself has somewhat limited eating options: tandoori, pizza, French ... We settled on the Turkish restaurant for some kebabs:
And night fell again as we walked back to the nid:
and joined the squirrels in our nest:
Tomorrow it's into Lyon by train.

Love your 'nest'! One could be very happy there, I think.
